What
is Art Discovery?
Art Discovery is an arts-in-education initiative designed to provide students and educators enhanced experiences and resources for teaching and learning about the arts. The main goal of the program is to cultivate in students the skills necessary to enjoy, understand and participate in the arts, as well as to use the arts to enhance creative expression, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
The Evergreen School District's Art Discovery program is comprised of hundreds of volunteers who donate their time and other resources to present a monthly topic to each class and then follow up with an arts-and-craft activity offering each child a hands-on experience. The success of the Art Discovery program would not be possible without its many volunteers and, especially, the dedication of Sharon Springer, who devotes many, many hours to organizing this program district-wide. Special thanks to Sharon and our many other volunteers!
What are
EARLs?
EARLs, which refers to Essential
Academic Learning Requirements in the Arts (Elementary Visual
Art), are guidelines which the school district has asked us to incorporate as we
teach Art Discovery. Ideally, volunteers will introduce one art
concept with each monthly topic. One example of art concepts we'll
review are the visual
concepts of lines. In June, volunteers would
then give their class a review called the Basic
Elements and Principles of Art Question Evaluation List.
